Duchess for a Day

I have always wondered what it would feel like to be a Royal, even if it was just for a moment, as I am sure so many of us ponder at least once in our lives.

Kendra Scott

Last week I had my very first Duchess Day. The wonderful Miss Jana over at Kendra Scott (Buckhead), invited me into the boutique to find the perfect earring and necklace set.  We focused our attention on the classics, something that could be dressed UP or Down much like what the Duchess does with her jewelry sets.

3 Reasons Why I love Kendra Scott & Why her Designs are what I consider”Kate Approved”

A Local Business

Kate loves to support her local businesses, whether in Berkshire (Way Back When) or London (Currently), she consistently focuses her attention on the British Designer or British Boutique.  Supporting a local business is one of the best ways to promote your heritage and support your local economy!

Kendra Scott originated in my hometown of Austin Texas.  Every single time I wear one of her pieces, it reminds me of home and while I may not be there I have somewhat of a keepsake with her jewelry.    Her boutique has now  grown into 3! The newest one being in Georgia (where I currently reside, YAY!

Kendra Gives Back

A lot of Kate’s patronages are selected based on causes close to her hear.  She consistently involves herself in organizations that have personally impacted her life.  From anti-bullying and Girls Guides to Alcoholism Recovery.

Another reason why I love Kendra Scott (both the Brand and Kendra herself), is that she does care about the community. Kendra began her design career making hats for cancer patients (as a former Cancer Survivor myself, I can say this support means more than the world!). From the beginning, the very foundation of her Company is about focusing her support and her attention to those she cares about.

Class, Class & More Class

Kate is all about having a classic look,  but has recently branched out into a little more trendy accessories.

Kendra’s unique designs are a perfect combination of classic and trendy. Simple classic designs in bold gemstones makes the perfect accessory for any outfit, anywhere.

I want to thank Kendra Scott (Buckhead) and especially Jana W. for hosting such a magical day! I ended up choosing 2 classic pieces I feel Kate would approve!

W.W.K.D.’s Royal Beauty Box

Brittany K. S. Davidson

When I think about RepliKating, most of the time I think about Kate’s clothing, hair and accessories.   Very seldom do I think about cosmetics and fragrances. Yes, I know what she wore, and yes I love the idea of using some of the Duchess’ favorite treatments. However, the biggest concern I have when I am at the makeup counter is, am I willing to purchase without sampling it first?

Some of the wonderful cosmetics, treatments and fragrances that Kate uses or has used in the past are aren’t even accessible in store. For example, Illiminum in White Gardenia Petals (Kate’s Wedding Day Perfume) isn’t available in any store near me. Which poses a problem when the fragrance itself costs upwards of $150. With Kate’s clothing I am willing to take a gamble, because there is always the option to tailor the garment, but when it comes to a fragrance everyone is different.

Illuminum White Gardenia Petals Perfume

So what is a RepliKator to do?

Last month I came across the perfect RepliKate Cosmetic Kit through What Would Kate Do. WWKD’s Royal Beauty Box is an assortment of various samples of Kate’s fragrances, hair accessories and cosmetics. Why is this Royal Beauty Box so nifty?

What Would Kate Do - Royal Beauty Box

Everything is already boxed up! No need to pay additional shipping from various retailers, no need to go in store to try and beg the makeup stylist to give you several samples and no need to drive all around town trying to find the item in the first place <3

WWKD offers the choice between a Basic Box ($25 for 5 samples) and a Deluxe ($30 for 6 samples & a Spot On Replica Sapphire Engagement Ring). Each item’s full value is listed, just to give you an idea of how much it costs to RepliKate our favorite Duchess. You also get to select what you want inside your Royal Beauty Box (nothing worse than getting a sample kit and all the samples are colors you would never use! This happens to me constantly….I like the idea that I pick and choose what I want to try).

Transforming Your RepliKate

What happens when your Repli-Kate isn’t

quite what you want it to be…

$_57 7.33.40 PM

Case and Point:

My Jaime Mascaro Clutch….it’s Pink…TOTALLY NOT ME…AT ALL (I’m not a Pink Girl)

Granted…I lucked out and found the same ‘GO TO’ clutch Kate uses on eBay…but there was no way I was going to use it in that hue…so what to do?

Dye It!

Angelus! The miracle Treatment!

Jaime Mascaro Black Ribbon Clutch

  1. Prep the Leather (rub the grain in the same direction with Alcohol) This will clean the leather and prep it for the dye.
  2. Shake the Bottle of Dye.  Apply the dye using the the sponge provided, make sure to apply the dye in the  same direction as the way you prepped it.
  3. I decided to keep dying it, (takes about an hour to dry between layers) 5 layers total….I may keep going (it took 3 bottle of dye ;))
  4. After the last layer, I painted the acrylic stitching with a acrylic dye, including the ribbon (it may also need another layer…but Im waiting to see how it wears.
  5. Lastly, I treated the clutch with waterproofing spray to make sure that the new dye job wouldn’t transfer onto my hands.
  6. Don’t forget to brush it after, to make sure the grain is tufted ;)

This is something you can do with your other suede pieces…just takes imagination and the ‘GO FOR IT’ attitude!

Today’s post is about my newest Repli-Kate purchase (Zimmermann Broderie Anglaise Roamer Dress)and the importance of wearing Polarized Sunglasses (Maui Jim Lenses Especially) given the sunny months are vastly approaching (for me they are already here! 94 degrees today)

Maui Jim HoloHolo

Maui Jim HoloHolo

First things First! MY DRESS!  Unfortunately I did not jump immediately onto the bandwagon when Kate first wore her Zimmermann Roamer Broderie Anglaise Dress….it SOLD OUT….and I was gutted having not purchased the dress when it was restocked.

What to Do?

Scour eBay until someone lists their dress for an obscene price? Contact every Zimmermann store in the world in the hopes they had one in back stock? Doubtful!

Instead I opted for AliExpress, I scoured through listings until I found a store that seemed to have the best quality for the price.  I purchased my dress during one of their ‘SALES’ (just in case the dress was a dud) within 1 week I had the dress (IMPRESSIVE! Since it was coming from China).  I opted to remove the lining around the skirt as it didn’t really look right (since it was white you could see it) and I opted to wear a beige slip instead. SCORE! HUGE SUCCESS!

Zimmermann Roamer Day Dress

Overall, for the price I am super happy with the dress.  Unlike the original Zimmermann (I was able to see a similar dress in their LA store) the fabric isn’t as thick or structured (something that could easily be rectified with starch).  The latticing is a nylon material instead of cotton, not noticeable on camera but definitely in person.  I opted for the largest size and then had it take in as this allotted me more fabric for length as I have noticed that anything coming from China ends up at least 6 inches too short for me.  The Broderie is different, however the embroidery is quite playful so it works.

Now onto the Sunglasses!

Working in the Eyewear industry has opened my eyes to the importance of UV & Glare Protection.  For the last decade I have focused my attention on educating my patients on how imperative it is that they wear POLARIZED sunglasses anytime they go outside (CLOUDY DAYS EVEN!)

Maui-Jim Logo

I discovered Maui Jim sunglasses at 18, and I have never once looked back.  I can honestly say they are the best sunglass lenses I have ever owned (and ironically are actually ranked #1 in the world when it comes to the protection and technology…SO YAY…I was giving my eyes the best as a teenager and I didn’t even know it!)

Maui Jim Venus Pools

Since Kate has been seen rocking a Pair of Polarized Folding Ray Bans, I thought I would put in my two cents on Polarized lenses :)

  1. ANYTIME YOU ARE OUTSIDE THERE IS UV AND POLARIZED LENSES PROTECT YOU FROM IT (Just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean the UV isn’t around, have you ever been sunburned on a foggy/cloudy day? if so your eyes probably got a little burned too)
  2. UV A (AGING) UV B  (BURNS) UV C  (CANCER) (Yep…all these UVs cause our eyes mas problemas..Maui Jims are the only ones that protect you against UV C in the United States)
  3. GLARE CAUSES SQUINTING AND EYE STRAIN (Treatments like Maui Jim’s Dual Flash Mirror stops your eyes from squinting… IE: BOTOX WITHOUT THE BOTOX :))
  4. BLUE BLOCKING (Certain polarized lenses offer Blue Blockers…why is that important? Our eyes HATE BLUE LIGHT! and it’s everywhere! It causes eye strain and stress)
  5. PROTECTION AGAINST GROWTHS ON YOUR EYE (UMMM YUCK! I have a growth on my eye from my teenage years…protect your eyes so you don’t have nasty burns and growths around your iris.
  6. YOU CAN SEE PAST REFLECTIONS (Polarized lenses block glare (reflections) every time the sun reflects off of a surface, the glare amplifies…meaning….NO BUENO for those baby blues, browns and greens. (only caveat…most polarized lenses mess with UV filters on cars, plane cockpits, cell phones, gas station terminals and the screens in cars….MAUI JIM lenses are the only lenses I have used that don’t seem to cause any disruption…I would however test the lenses on older technology as I own an iPhone 6…not sure about other cell phones)
  7. CLARITY AND ENHANCEMENT (there are only a handful that give you crispness and clarity as well as enhancement, I always encourage one to go outside with the two types they are comparing to FEEL the difference…Maui Jim is 1 of 2 brands that use a patented color enhancement (vs color adjustment).
  8. THEY GIVE YOU ENOUGH LIGHT FOR YOUR EYES TO ADJUST IN FLUCTUATING LIGHT SCENARIOS (Just because the lenses are dark does not mean they are protecting you.  It is actually doing the opposite.  Dark lenses trick your eye into thinking its dark out…causing your eyes to dilate…which in turn allows all the harmful UV and glare into your eyes….UMM NO THANK YOU! You can say you have sensitive eyes and then go for a dark lens…however they aren’t going to do anything for you…except make your eyes ever more sensitive in the future)

I honestly could go on and on and on…given this is what I do all day long…however I will sleep soundly knowing I at least shared the minimum.  If you have more questions feel free to ask me in the comments below.

If I could I would give everyone the opportunity to own a pair of MAUI JIMS as they truly are the best.  Instead I encourage you to comment and engage in conversations about Polarized sunglasses…You never know what could happen if you do (ummmm maybe a VIP card for new pair of sunglasses?…Maybe…its worth commenting and then finding out :))

Gifting with CENTIME GIFT

Brittany K. S. Davidson

February 26,2015

Hunting for the perfect gift is always so tricky… ISN’T IT?!

especially when the person you are gifting has everything, or hasn’t given you a clue as to what they want…THIS IS MY CURSE.

Places like ETSY.COM are the perfect places to find that cute ‘something’ for someone special

Centime Gifts

Through my perusing, I came across a lovely little personalized jewelry company, CENTIME GIFT.  After ordering a few pieces and falling in love with the detail and design, I felt it necessary to have a little interview with the owner to get to know a little more about her inspirations, Repli-Kates and the perfect gift.

There are so many amazing pieces in CENTIME’S collection, It was difficult choosing, but for me it was all about the COORDINATES BRACELET, OVERHAND KNOT RING & the BUTTON PENDANT.  I tend to opt for extremely unique and simple pieces as to not fight with my wardrobe choices.

Coordinates Bracelet

What originally drew me to CENTIME GIFTS was how accurate their Repli-Kates are, so I just couldn’t resist getting one…given Repli-Kating is dear to my heart.

I decided on the Button Pendant, however the INITIAL CHARM BRACELET also caught my eye (THEIR EXAMPLE HAS A ‘B’ INITIAL…I MEAN REALLY…IT WAS TRULY MEANT TO BE), however I had to be disciplined and buy myself only one Repli-Kate :P.

Check out the FULL Line Here:

I strongly believe in getting to know the person behind such a creative endeavor, so without further adieu, meet GINNY the founder of CENTIME GIFT :)

Tell us something about yourself? A little bio ☺
My name is Ginny. I am from Chicago, IL. I have a small little boy who has re-defined everything I am since he was born.

When did you form Centime Gift?
The motivation to start Centime comes greatly from my son. I started it together with my friend Andrea earlier this year. Centime’s business is mainly personalized items so it will stay small and lovely forever for us to keep our work-life balance.

Have you always been a fan of jewelry, if so what would you consider your favorite piece of jewelry ever created or worn and why?

I am not a big fan of generic jewelry. I guess diamond is not my best friend. I am more into personal pieces and keepsakes that reminds me of the lovely people and moment in life.

Both Andrea and I are obsessed with gift-giving. We are just like Leslie Knope from the show Parks and Recreation, gift-giving wise. We like to celebrate every occasion imaginable and we take joy from the look on our beloved friends and family’s faces when we find gifts that surprise and please them.

Do you design your own pieces, or do you take from current trends?
I never think of myself as a designer. It’s a word to describe people with much greater talents and skills, I think. I don’t follow trends either. I am more into those minimalist, classic, timeless pieces that everybody knows and loves.

What would you consider the #1 piece of jewelry all women need?

Her being comfortable in her own skin. Taking care of herself. And maybe a keepsake from her family.

How would you describe your personal style/jewelry style?

Minimalist, classic, timeless, appropriate but still modern. I think Kate does this style the best.

Are you a RepliKator? Did you stay up like half the world to watch the Royal Wedding?

I certainly can’t pull off everything that she wears but I am definitely inspired by her, a great deal. And I certainly did.

What made you decide to make RepliKate Jewelry?
They are just so beautiful, but not always affordable. They look like a million bucks but the everyday woman like you and me can still wear them easily. I just can’t help myself.

Would you ever consider going custom? Or increasing the amount of RepliKates in your store?

Most of my pieces are personalized. I will definitely create more RepliKates. I want to do all of her jewelries but my time is so limited. Please tell me which one I should do next.

Do you make the jewelry in house? or do you have someone who makes your designs for you?

As of now I do with the help of my assistant but in the near future I will definitely need to get more help. I want to further improve Centime’s quality and service.

What’s your favorite Kate piece of jewelry? Outfit?
I can’t decide which one of her fabulous earrings I should crown my favorite. Please don’t make me answer such difficult question.

If you could only have one piece of jewelry for the rest of your life what would it be?

My wedding ring.

What’s your favorite Stone?

Citrine – the stone of November.

What’s your favorite Cut?
I love anything pear shaped or drop shaped.

Gold or Silver?
Rose gold, please. It’s a pity I can’t do rose gold at the moment.

Do you do this Full Time or is this your Hobby?

It’s my bread and butter.

What do you store your jewelry in?
I have all the gadgets: the purse, the box, the cabinet with silica gel bags, the hangers. They are not just for my pieces but for Centime as well.

What is the best way to keep your jewelry clean?
I can go on for days about this. But I will just bore you guys to death. Please read Centime’s “manual” that goes with the piece for my very informative speech on this topic.

How does one organize their jewelry closet?
Everyday wears. Investment pieces for important events and the rest.

Please store different metals separately. Make sure your earrings are always together and your necklaces not tangled.

Do you have any new pieces launching soon?
I am going to launch a personalized karma necklace, family ring, constellation necklace and bar necklace with engraved personal handwriting soon but they are all for the next holiday.

What’s your most popular item?

Aside from the RepliKate pieces, everybody seems to love the stackable name rings, the nameplate bracelet and necklace, and the russian ring necklace.

Personally, I love the two name rings and the roman numeral rings. They are just so young and modern.

One of my favorite pieces is your Coordinate Bracelet, reason being the buyer gets to decide what the bracelet says and where the location is? What inspired this bracelet and what would you make your coordinates bracelet say?

Where my son is born.

Will you be introducing more earrings to your collection?
Yes, I am thinking about adding some name earrings and monogram earrings as well as some more Repli-Kates.

It looks like Centime Gifts is branching out by not just selling jewelry but prints, do you think you will expand to other fashionable mediums, if so, what?

Right now we are very busy with jewelries. We sell very limited prints per month because it takes so much time to draw them.

Prince or Princess (are you hoping Kate will have a boy or girl?)

I hope God will bless her (and us) with a beautiful princess.

There you have it Ladies and Gents, a truly gifted woman with such an amazing talent for the simplistic and truly meaningful presents.

A Closer Look at Jenny Packham’s Blush Sequin Gown

Brittany K.S. Davidson

Jenny Packham, where do I begin?

No matter what aspect to Jenny Packham’s Label that you study, you will, in the end, walk away knowing/believing that she is the queen of utter whimsy and femininity…She is one of my all time favorite designers.

Lucky enough for me, I came across Kate’s Gown on www.Preownedweddingdresses.com. What a great site! Preowned Wedding Dresses is full of gowns (usually worn only once, if that)….I strongly recommend you check it out, you never know what you will find there :).

Check Out the Detail

Something a little fun about this gown, is how sheer it is where there aren’t any sequins…kind of sexy.  However staying with Jenny’s ULTRA FEM concept the blush color keeps the fabric blending with your own skin tone, so no one will really know that the dress is see through in areas.

  Top Detail

There is a lovely slip underneath the dress that helps keep all stitch-work away from any sensitive skin.

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown

Champagne, Silver, Gold, Pink Crystals adorn the gown in a myriad of patterns…It’s no wonder Kate accessorized her Gown with the Links of London Bubble Effervescence Bubble Stiletto Earrings.  If I could describe the dress it would be “A Bubbly Glass of Pink Champagne”

There are several tiny Swarovski Crystals all over the bodice, as well as tiny silver beads along the waistband.

Check Out the Technique

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown Hemline

The Hem of the Gown is left exposed in order to hem to the correct length…if you are tall enough, you can leave it raw in order to mimic the top half of the gown (id hem it ;)

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown

The Sequins, while the look very pink, are actually a very light pink/champagne color.   When the light hits them they tend to reflect the colors around them…giving off a more vibrant hue.

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown

The sequins run along the same fabric used for the sleeves, a lovely shade of nude…which depending on your skin tone, will shift color.

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown Beadwork

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown with Slip

The slip is made of the same fabric as the gown itself, so that everything blends in.

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown

The Sequins do their own thing, just like velvet, you are able to swipe your hand up or down to create an interesting pattern.

Jenny Packham Blush Sequin Gown Interior Detail

The Gown was made in India, based off of what the label says.

The sequins are looped through the fabric, strung along the entire line of the fabric (meaning…if you break one, its VERY easy to loose a line of sequins….this scares me….I’m going to have to be super careful)

All I can say is that A LOT of patience went into making this gown as there is detail I am still finding every time I look at it.

For those who are crafty, I hope you find this inspiring…a little peak into what it takes to make a dress for a Duchess.

Casual Chic’ing

Hannah Jackson

Last month we saw Kate Middleton “dressed down” in a black hoodie for an afternoon with the 23rd Poplar Beaver Scout Colony.

This look is my personal favorite as it’s a nice combination of comfort AND style! Personally, I think “casual chic” (as I call it) or “dressy casual” is coming back in style and is the perfect way to combine the comfort of casual with a polished look.

How do you style yourself in casual chic, you ask? Its actually very simple and is probably why Kate has been out and about in this style lately (especially given her little baby bump)!

Repli-kater’s Guide to Casual Chic:

1. Style one dressy wardrobe item with a casual wardrobe item.

Credit BAUER-GRIFFIN via Flickr.com

FOR EXAMPLE: Solid colored skinny jeans and a blouse or a fitted top.

2. Colors: Keep your tops/dresses in a solid color.

HINT: Prints can be a bit noisy and distract from other elements of your casual chic statement.

3. Use your statement accessories. This is what you have waited for all year!!!!!!.

Credit Michael Garnett via Flickr.com

HINT: Choose either one statement necklace to go with your simple top or statement earrings to polish off your casual chic look…GRANTED KATE GETS THE OPPORTUNITY TO WEAR HER STATEMENT JEWELRY WITH SOME STATEMENT GOWNS…UNTIL IM A PRINCESS I WILL WEAR MINE CASUALLY :)

4. Footwear

Honestly I feel footwear can vary depending on your outfit or mood. The ULTIMATE casual chic look would be polished off with riding boots (solid black..preferably for the ultra chic look).

Credit to Flickr.com

But sometimes, I wear casual nude flats or event tennis shoes for the casual element of the outfit…

5. Another alternative to statement jewelry is a statement handbag. Both Pippa and Kate do this well.

Remember you want one piece of the outfit to be the centerpiece and keep everything else simple and casual for a polished casual chic look, just like Kate!

The Perfect Statement Piece

Hannah Jackson

Hannah's Jewels

Hannah’s Jewels

So… THIS is a picture of ALL the accessories I own. It is A LOT! And I can only imagine that Kate has just as much (albeit probably a bit more organized!)

Each day and each outfit I choose, presents a dilemma of “How do I want to accessorize this outfit? and what are the best ways to accessorize this outfit without going overboard?” At the same time, I also want my personality and/or mood to be reflected.

We all know that Kate likes to hand pick her wardrobe, we can only assume that she is just as involved with her accessories. Although Kate is more understated in her accessory choices (as the future Queen Consort) , she has pushed the boundaries with statement jewelry on a few occasions such as the Royal Film Performance of Mandela: Walk to Freedom, to the Cartier necklace she borrowed from The Queen for a fundraising event at the National Portrait Gallery in in early 2014.

So how do you choose the perfect accessory to compliment your outfit?

Wear a few well-chosen accessories at a time.

Banana Republic Accent Necklace

Banana Republic Accent Necklace

A lot of people make the mistake of piling on ALL their accessories they own at once (I have been guilty of that as well). When it comes to accessories, less is usually more. If you’re wearing jewelry, a watch, a scarf, a hat and sunglasses, no one piece will stand out, and your outfit will end up looking cluttered. Choose a few accessories that accent your outfit or highlight the feature you want to play up.

Wearing a full jewelry getup, complete with earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings, can overwhelm your look. Try wearing either earrings or a necklace instead of both. My rule of thumb is if I wear a statement necklace, than my earrings will be simple. If I wear statement earrings , then I usually pass on a necklace, and MAYBE add a simple bracelet to balance out the look.

Banana Republic Jewelry

If you do wear a lot of different accessories, make sure they aren’t competing for attention. Match your metals and colors so that your accessories look like they were chosen with intention. For example, you could wear big gold hoops, a colorful warm-toned scarf, and a gold watch for a streamlined look.

Kate is always sure to make her statement necklace the center of attention, choosing solid dresses (as opposed to prints) to draw attention to the accessory.

Pair bold accessories with understated clothes. Neutral clothing can be completely transformed when you add a few bold accessories. If your wardrobe has a lot of neutrals like black, white, beige, olive or navy, accessorizing gives you a chance to play with fun colors and give your outfits a boost.

Here are a few ways to use bold accessories to add some life to your neutral outfits:

  • Pair a thin red or hot pink belt with a black or navy dress.
  • Wear a splashy orange or yellow scarf or shoes with khaki or olive-colored clothing.
  • Freshen up your white blouse with a multicolored statement necklace or big chandelier earrings.

Kate managed to follow this fashion rule by pairing a green silk ‘Maja” dress by Diane Von Furstenberg (DVF), the “Lytton” leopard print clutch bag, and black Prada heels for a polished, yet bold look.

Avoid being too matchy. It might be tempting to play off the blue polka dots in your dress with matching blue earrings, a blue necklace and blue shoes. However, matching to this extent can sometimes look a little old-fashioned or childish. Throwing some unexpected, yet surprisingly perfect accessories into the mix shows off your creativity and adds interest to the outfit.

Fashion Color Wheel

Fashion Color Wheel

  • Use the color wheel  to help you come up with interesting color combinations that accent each other beautifully. For example, if you’re wearing a purple shirt, try adding something mustard or lemon-colored to your outfit instead of hunting down the same shade of purple. Since yellow is opposite purple on the color wheel, your outfit will be appealing to the eye.
  • Wear colors with black and white. If you’re wearing a black and white flowered top, then you could pop in an electric blue medium sized beaded necklace and some cute blue earrings.

So WHAT is the color wheel?

The color wheel is that fun concept we all learned as kids about the primary and secondary colors. To find complimentary colors, go to the color on the color wheel that makes up the main component of the outfit. The colors directly across from it, are the ones that compliment it the most (and remember diamonds and black compliment ANY color) :

You’ll find there are a TON of different options/color schemes out there and will be mixing and matching in no time! So get out there and start accessorizing!!!!

Pippa has been known to be a little bolder with her color contrasting (one of the perks of NOT being the future Queen Consort) and uses this styling well and often.

It’s All About the Face

Brittany K.S. Davidson   LauraandBrit   At the beginning of July, I was in my best friends wedding.  Not just in the wedding, but the Maid of Honor.  Now, I don’t know about you, but for me, that means a whole bunch.

What a Special Day

What a Special Day

Being there when something goes awry, being prepared for any possible scenario, getting the groomsmen to focus, SPEECH and lastly making sure the ‘getting ready’ aspect is squared away and the least stressful possible (Well, at least for the bride).

9am....been up since 6am...no makeup...and I look like a poodle...

9am….been up since 6am…no makeup…and I look like a poodle…

Approximately one month before the wedding, my bride had mentioned the possibility of having our makeup done by a PRO instead of having to do it ourselves (& whether or not I could find someone).  While I liked the idea, I didn’t exactly know any makeup artists, or rather any I’d trust to do my bride’s makeup…THAT’S WHERE BOBBI BROWN COMES IN!

I have been using Bobbi Brown cosmetics for years, and the fact that Kate used it for her wedding further convinced me we needed Bobbi.  Given the wedding was being held in Santa Barbara, I contacted the boutique that was located in the local Saks 5th Ave.  I explained the importance of the makeup aesthetic (looking like the very best/natural/enhanced version of yourself) & time frame.  The manager of the boutique quickly reserved a spot for us ‘day of’ with a Senior Makeup Stylist, as well as a ‘trial run’ for the bride.  The second we had the ‘trial run’ I knew, Natascha was going to FABULOUS…and man did she not disappoint!   All4ofus

CAN I JUST SAY!!!!! I have been doing my makeup wrong for YEARS!!!!

I learnt so much from Natascha in regards to application and the basics, so I decided to do a little Q&A in regards to the ‘INs and OUTs’ of makeup.

Questions & Answers

1. What Shades of eye shadow/lipstick does the Duchess of Cambridge wear? That you can tell, or that you know?

Various shades of browns on her eyes.  She wears Bobbi Brown’s Sandwash Pink lipstick with pale pink lip gloss on top; Bobbi Brown Pale Pink blush and a sweep of Shimmer brick on top. Bobbi-Brown-Lip-Color-Sandwash-Tulle Bobbi Brown Pale Pink Blush

2. What are the best ways to start a skin care regime? What should one focus on keeping in their arsenal?  Cleansing and removing make- up properly is very important! Lightweight oil based removers can be a life saver at removing make up completely – Bobbi Brown Cleansing oil is the best!! Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil Daytime sunscreen and moisture is most important and using products that are compatible with make-up, if you are wearing it. Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself so any anti-aging and /or repair products are most effective at night. I believe a good eye cream is most important because the skin under the eye is much thinner than on the face and has no pores. First signs of aging develop under the eyes for many women and using products not tested for the eye area such as moisturizers can be harmful.

3. Contouring? What to use? Do you believe in contouring?

Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick   I like to use Bobbi Brown Foundation Sticks for contouring because cream is very easy to blend and layer for a more natural look on the skin especially in person verses photographs. I am not a fan of contouring for everyday wear but for photographs it can add beautiful dimensions to the face

4. What do you recommend in regards to eyes for woman with glasses?

Eyeliner can be most impactful for women with glasses since it frames the eye and is still visible through the glasses

5. How do you pick the correct foundation? What is the best foundation for a natural look?

Choosing the right foundation begins with choosing what is best for your skin type. If the foundation color is skin tone correct it will look natural. A liquid foundation will always look more natural than a powder.

6. Eyeliner Tips? How do you get that perfect Tail? How do you control your brush?

Having the right brush is key, and a liner you have control of.  I prefer to use the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner because it sets quickly and stays where its put.  With this specific liner use a Ultra Fine Liner Brush.

7. What is the best way to go about finding a good makeup artist?

I think word of mouth is one of the best ways to find a good artist.   OurBacks   8. Does your hair color contribute to the tones of your makeup? Or just your skin tone? When I approach a natural makeup application on a woman I always choose colors of eye shadow that compliment both her hair and eye color to naturally bring out her features and make it “not about the makeup”

9. How does one go about making the correct decision on selecting shadows and blushes when they don’t have access to a good artist? Is there an equation for different skintones/eyecolors/haircolor?

I think it is very important to work with an artist to choose the correct color palette for your skin tone/eye color/ hair color – if you are foreign to make up, otherwise you may end up with a pile of makeup in a drawer that you will never use.

10. What is the one makeup item you couldn’t live without?

Concealer :)

11. If you were stuck with only 5 items out of your makeup kit what would they be?

Concealer/ foundation stick, mascara, moisturizer, lip balm, bronzing powder.

13. What is the one thing you see women do frequently in regards to makeup that you wish you could stop?

Wearing foundation in the wrong undertone to either appear darker or lighter.

14. Is there a way to set makeup for all day? Or in humid conditions?
Bobbi Brown Long Wear Set

Using Long wear products such as Bobbi Brown’s long-wear foundation, eyeliner, cream eye shadows will keep products on for 12 hours and in humid conditions.

15. What is the one item in a makeup kit that woman use incorrectly or not enough?

Foundation and concealer incorrectly

16. Lipstick? You may like a lipstick on someone, but how do you know that it will look good on you, is it true that a lipstick/tint will read different on different people?

Lipstick is completely dependant on what the natural undertone in the lip is. Colors can change according to how the lipstick color blends with the natural lip color.

17. Is highlighting a good idea?

Highlighting can be beautiful if it is done properly with the right products for your skin type. I love to highlight the cheekbones with Bobbi Brown shimmer brick which is flattering on almost everyone

18. How many times should one exfoliate?

2-3 times a week with a formula that is gentle on the skin  – I prefer natural chemical free exfoliators

19. Is it a big “no, no” to line your water line?

If you are lining the water line it should be lined top and bottom not only on the bottom (that’s the no- no). Your bottom and top liner should always connect in the outer corner of your eye

20. How many times should you clean your brushes a month?

Clean with brush cleaning spray daily on brushes used for cream or liquid products; wash them once a month with a gentle shampoo.

21. When is it time to throw out your makeup and re-buy?

Mascara should be replaced every 2-3 months ; foundations or cream products usually have a shelf life of 2 years maximum but if your products smell rancid its time to throw them away. Powder products can last for many years if they are not used with water and stored in a cool dry area

22. Filling in brows? How dark is too dark?

Your brow should generally be one shade lighter than your hair to avoid a harsh look. Warming up the brow to the hair color can also soften and lift the face.

23. What is the main difference between professional makeup brushes and low-end brushes?

The quality of the hair -real animal hair verses synthetic bristles and craftsmanship of the handles – wood versus plastic/synthetics.

 24. Is there anything else you think one should know about makeup?

Confidence is everything but makeup makes it so much more fun! :) The right brushes and tools can make the biggest impact on how your products will blend and layer on your skin! Invest in good quality brushes!!!

 25. Is there a right way to apply false lashes?

The lashes need to be measured and sometimes cut and adjusted to fit the shape of the eye properly; clear duo adhesive is the best and safest adhesive to use.
